Classe : module BEP Terminale. Objectif : préparation à l'épreuve orale obligatoire. Pré-requis : bon niveau d'anglais. Document :article from magazine "the Economist", Jan.12th 1991 DARK FEARS : "Curfew in Atlanta".
Séquence 1
1 heure. Travail d'anticipation sur la lecture d'un article par un décodage de l'image préalable.

Image présentée seule, sans texte, sans titre. Travail en groupes de 3 ou 4.
A) Identify and describe the picture : say whether it is a photograph, a painting, a cartoon or a drawing.
Framing
Grammar : revision of prepositions and adverbs : Above,away (from), behind, below, between, close to, near, under, downward, forward. On either side, at the top, in the background, in the foreground, at the bottom, in the middle, on th left, on the right.
B) Understanding and interpreting it.
1- What elements strike you from the background to the foreground ? - cop's head / clock ; time / almost twelve ; hand enlarged / two figures runaways ? First, try to think of an interpretation for each element.
Then, decide what the relation is between the different elements.
2- Dramatization : what are the links between ?
- the clock and the hand. - the clock and the buildings. - the clock and the figures. Symbolism of the clock : allegorical imagery, personification of an abstract entity, idea of law represented by a clock-mechanism.
3- Build your own meaning.
Grammar : hypothesis : maybe, perhaps, probably, I think, I suppose, must, may, likely...
C) Analyse
- Why did the artist draw the picture ? - What message did he want to convey ? - Who is the picture targeted to ? - What is going to happen ? - What picture of the law is given here ? - What problem does the picture illustrate ? - What caption would you give ? Vocabulary : detention, a repeat offender, prison space, to break jail, to send / to put to jail, to escape from jail, an E-man, to deter, a deterrent, to act as a deterrent, to be ineffective as a deterrent.
Group-work : one group will tell the other groups how they "see" the picture and the other groups will try to criticize the interpretation.
